Basic Eligibility Requirements

Be at least 18 years old

Demonstrate maturity, consistency, and reliability

Be willing to commit to one child only

Align with the mission and values of The Big Brother Project

Be able to communicate respectfully with children, parents, and staff

Commit to regular contact with their Little Brother (minimum expectations apply)
This role is designed for individuals who are willing to show up consistently over time.
Personal Big Brothers are expected to prioritize reliability, communication, and follow-through.
Screening & Training
Not all applicants will be approved. Our screening process is designed to ensure the safety and well-being of every child.
Step 1: Application

All prospective Personal Big Brothers begin by completing an application that helps us understand their background, motivation, availability, and alignment with our mission.
Step 2: Background Screening

Approved applicants complete a background screening as part of our commitment to child safety and responsible mentorship.
Step 3: Interview & Review

Applicants participate in multiple interviews and review processes to assess readiness, communication, and understanding of the role.
Step 4: Training & Preparation

Training will cover:

Expectations and boundaries in one-to-one mentorship

Age-appropriate communication
-
Emotional awareness and trauma-informed care (at a basic level)

Mandatory reporting and safety guidelines

How to be supportive without trying to “fix” everything

The role of consistency and reliability

Step 5: Matching Process

Matches are made thoughtfully, taking into account age, personality, availability, and the needs of the child.
Step 6: Ongoing Oversight & Support

Personal Big Brothers receive ongoing support, guidance, and check-ins from The Big Brother Project throughout the match to ensure the relationship remains healthy, safe, and beneficial for both the child and the volunteer.
